The Polar Plunge: What to Expect

The Polar Plunge: What to Expect

March 14th, 2025 / Burnham Arlidge

“You crazy people” said the Expedition Leader.

For many travelers heading to Antarctica, the wildlife, icebergs, and breathtaking landscapes are the main attractions. But for the truly adventurous, there’s one challenge that stands out—the Polar Plunge.

Jumping into the freezing Antarctic waters may sound crazy, and perhaps it is. However, it is also a notorious rite of passage these days for anyone lucky enough to visit Antarctica.

The quote above is not taken from a single Expedition leader, but every single Expedition Leader I have ever sailed with!

On each of my voyages down south I have taken part in the Polar Plunge. Whilst I have never regretted it, I would not describe it as entirely pleasant (you can find a link to my last two Polar Plunges videos at the bottom of the page).

There is no denying though that the Polar Plunge is an adrenaline-pumping experience that is as exhilarating as it is unforgettable.

What Is the Polar Plunge?

The Polar Plunge is exactly what it sounds like: a daring leap into the icy waters of Antarctica.

Most expedition cruise operators now offer the Polar Plunge as a free, optional activity.

Depending on who you sail with, there are two options in how you do the Polar Plunge.

Most operators tie a zodiac up the gangway and passengers jump, one at a time, from the zodiac.

However, occasionally, operators will do a Polar Plunge from the shore. From personal experience, this option is far more unpleasant as you need to walk into the freezing water slowly and painfully.

Another negative aspect of doing the Polar Plunge from the shore is that you then need to take a cold zodiac trip back to the shop before you can have a hot shower!

How Cold is it?

The simple answer to that question is - very!

The water temperature is a bone-chilling -1 to 2°C (30-35°F), cold enough to take your breath away—literally.

After many years of doing the Polar Plunge, I still am not used to how cold it actually feels when I hit the water.

The shock factor is so acute that most operators now tie a rope around your waist in case you pass out or become disoriented by the cold. This way the expedition team can pull you back into the zodiac should something occur.

Rest assured though, most people are absolutely fine and have a great story to tell. You will only be in the water for 30 seconds or so before being handed a warming mug of hot chocolate and a dry robe.

What to Expect

1. The Build-Up

The excitement begins as the expedition team announces that the plunge is happening.

Passengers gather at the zodiac embarkation area, dressed in swimwear and bathrobes, and await their turn.

There’s usually a mix of nervous energy, excitement, and a bit of friendly peer pressure.

Be warned, it can sometimes get cold waiting for the plunge!

2. The Jump

When your name is called, you step up to the platform or shoreline, the team tie a rope around your waist, take a deep breath, and make the leap.

The moment your body hits the water, it’s an instant shock—your heart races, your skin tingles, and for a split second, your brain screams, Get out!

3. The Aftermath

The moment you emerge from the water, the expedition team is ready with towels, warm drinks, and a hearty round of applause.

Some ships even provide a sauna to help you warm up quickly. The feeling afterward? Pure exhilaration.

Why Do the Polar Plunge?

The Ultimate Rush – The freezing water triggers a flood of endorphins, leaving you feeling euphoric and more alive than ever.

A Badge of Honor – Not everyone can say they’ve jumped into Antarctic waters. It’s a story you’ll tell for years to come.

A Connection to the Environment – Experiencing Antarctica in such an extreme, visceral way deepens your appreciation for the continent’s raw beauty.

Is It Safe?

Yes, absolutely!

The Polar Plunge is carefully managed by the expedition team, who ensure all safety precautions are in place.

Passengers are typically harnessed with a safety rope, and a zodiac or rescue crew is always on standby.

That said, it’s not for everyone. If you have a heart condition or other medical concerns, it’s best to check with the expedition doctor before taking part.

Tips for Taking the Plunge

  • Don’t overthink it – The more you hesitate, the harder it becomes. Just step up and go for it!

  • Wear something easy to remove – A swimsuit is best. You won’t want to struggle with extra layers when getting warm afterward.

  • Have a towel and warm clothes ready – The faster you can dry off, the more enjoyable the experience will be.

  • Get in early - if you arrive late to the Polar Plunge you will be in a long queue and getting colder and colder as you wait.

  • Embrace the moment – Scream, laugh, or just soak it all in. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Final Thoughts

The Polar Plunge isn’t just about jumping into cold water—it’s about embracing adventure, pushing your limits, and experiencing Antarctica in the most extreme way possible.

It’s crazy, it’s cold, and it’s completely unforgettable.

Always remember that the Polar Plunge is very much dependent on weather and, although most operators try for the Polar Plunge, it may sometimes be prevented from happening.

So, if you find yourself standing on the deck of a ship in Antarctica with the chance to take the plunge—will you go for it?
