Skiing in Antarctica is an exciting mix of picturesque views, pristine landscapes and a variety of wildlife to keep you company.

Many tour operators offer skiing as an optional activity, so if you are planning on visiting Antarctica make sure you add this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to your bucket list!

Do I need to be a good skier?

In short, yes.

You should be a confident skier with experience skiing both blue or black runs.

Some ski expedition companies will require you to undertake training in roped glacier travel and crevasse rescue.

If you’re new to skiing, we don’t recommend starting in Antarctica due to the isolation, difficult terrain and limited facilities.

Antarctica is a pristine environment, and as such, you will be making your own path down the mountains.

The terrain can vary from small slopes to steep descents. However, as there are no chair lifts, the ascent is often the most difficult part!

Ascending regularly involve the use of ropes, crampons and an ice axe.

The level of physical exertion will be high, and your physical fitness should reflect this. Therefore, we recommend participants have a reasonable degree of fitness and a high-level of skill and proficiency.

This is skiing at it most raw form, at one with nature.

What type of skiing is available?

There are many different types of skiing packages available, varying in duration and skill level. From single and multi-day, cross-country skiing expeditions to exhilarating backcountry downhill runs, the options are plentiful.

It’s advisable to check with your tour operator to see what type of skiing options are available on your cruise.

As Antarctica doesn’t have any five-star ski resorts, multi-day trips are often paired with camping, which is an experience in itself.

However, the majority of travellers retreat to the comfort of the cruise ship to enjoy a drink on the balcony or a relaxing evening in the jacuzzi.

What can you see while skiing in Antarctica?

Skiing offers a unique opportunity to see some of the world’s most spectacular landscapes from breathtaking vantage points.

While the views are unlike anything you have experienced, so too is the wildlife. See orcas and fur seals, ski past colonies of penguins and if you’re lucky, spot a humpback whale.

What do I need to bring?

Packing the right equipment is the key to having an enjoyable trip. Your tour operator will provide a detailed packing list, which you will need to follow.

Some equipment may be provided or available to rent (such as ski’s, ski touring boots and poles), however, you will be expected to bring goggles, gloves and all other clothing to ensure you stay warm and dry.

Always follow the packing list.

Depending on your selected trip, you may be able to (or required) to bring your own ski equipment. Check with your tour operator if you are unsure, as you can't run down to the store to pick up anything you may have missed!
